Program Summary

The Research Experience for International Undergraduates (REIU) program at Kent State University supports active research participation with cutting edge technology by undergraduate students in the Tele-Robotics areas of research. REIU program involves students in meaningful ways in ongoing research projects at Advanced Tele-Robotics (ATR) Laboratory in Kent State University. Undergraduate students design algorithms and techniques to safely, securely, and efficiently operate TeleBot (Telepresence Humanoid Robot) in a limited field. A worldwide recruitment process is used to select cohorts of undergraduate students to participate in a four-week summer research program at the host institution. This program includes mentoring by the experienced computer science faculty members, technical seminars and workshops, student presentations, field trips and other professional development opportunities. This program is supported by the Department of Computer Science at Kent State University.

The objective of this REIU program is to involve international undergraduate students in quality research experiences in the exciting and promising field of Tele-robotics, especially Drones and telepresence humanoid robots. The program builds on the research of an experienced team of faculty mentors and uses the telepresence humanoid research infrastructure established at the university. The research is particularly focused on TeleBot’s motion synchronizations, stable motion plan, secure communications, and human-robot-interaction. These topics are timely and appealing to undergraduates and should offer a quality research experience to the students.

In addition, these global opportunities allow students to apply the academic and research knowledge they have obtained, while enriching their overall Kent State experience with diverse cultural and international exposure and valuable experience.
